Online marketplaces like Amazon and eBay will be required to pay their “fair share” for electronic waste recycling under new government proposals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Circular Economy Minister Mary Craig stated that the planned reforms will create a “level playing field” for electronics manufacturers, placing more pressure on international retailers to contribute to recycling costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some foreign sellers have avoided this fee by selling products through online marketplaces, leaving British companies like Currys to shoulder most of the expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
E-cigarette manufacturers will also be expected to pay more. The new plans are expected to come into effect no earlier than January 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2023, the UN estimated that 844 million vapes are discarded annually. However, it noted that 77 times more electronic waste is generated from unnecessary toys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Under these new plans, online marketplaces\u2014Amazon, eBay, and others\u2014will face much stricter obligations. This will ensure that foreign sellers using their platforms also contribute to the costs of collection and recycling,” Craig said in a comment to PA News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The minister oversees the UK government’s commitments to the circular economy, which aims to reuse, repair, and recycle materials for a more environmentally sustainable future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Amazon told BBC News it “strives to minimize waste and help customers reuse, repair, and recycle their products.” The company claimed it offers free recycling options to customers, including home pickup through its website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Other major online marketplaces, such as eBay, Temu, and Euronics, have yet to comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The plans include reclassifying vapes as a separate category of electronic waste rather than toys, leisure, or sports equipment for recycling purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the UK nonprofit Material Focus, approximately five million vapes in the UK are either littered or disposed of with general waste each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Additionally, UK households discard over 100,000 tonnes of small household electronics annually, such as kettles or lamps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The government will require online marketplaces to register with the Environment Agency and report sales in the UK by foreign sellers. These data will calculate the financial contributions online marketplaces must make to cover electronic waste recycling costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
New obligations will be overseen by the Environment Agency and similar bodies in Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. This step will help fund recycling services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We welcome the government\u2019s new measures aimed at creating a level playing field for waste responsibility, ensuring online marketplaces contribute,” said Currys CEO Alex Baldock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
