Universal, known for its global network of theme parks, has officially started the planning process for the largest entertainment complex in Europe. The company has submitted a special development request to the UK\u2019s Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) to build a 476-acre project in Bedfordshire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
DLUHC is currently reviewing the submitted documentation, which includes design plans, drawings, and an environmental assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In its statement, Universal said the project involves creating \u201ca world-class entertainment resort with a theme park comprising several themed zones, hotel accommodation for guests, and numerous retail, dining, and entertainment facilities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The initiative is supported by the UK\u2019s Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The application was submitted directly to the government, bypassing the local Bedford council, underscoring its national importance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A spokesperson for DLUHC confirmed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cUniversal Destinations & Experiences has submitted an application for planning permission to develop an entertainment resort and related infrastructure in Bedford.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The department added that the documentation would be published \u201cin due course.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This move follows Universal\u2019s confirmation three months ago that the company is actively pushing forward its first theme park in the UK. Construction is expected to begin next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Universal describes the project as a world-class theme park featuring multiple zones inspired by iconic brands, immersive storytelling, innovative attractions, and unique experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By comparison, Universal Studios Florida, spanning 541 acres, is one of the most visited theme parks in the world. It was the first in a network that now includes parks in Los Angeles, Japan, China, and Singapore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Universal aims to create unique zones and attractions in its parks that have no equal anywhere else in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In April, the BBC reported that despite speculation, a Harry Potter-themed area would not be part of the Bedfordshire park. Instead, attractions inspired by the worlds of James Bond, Jurassic Park, Paddington, and The Lord of the Rings (possibly including a castle) may appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
